A basic single skin steel roller shutter garage door is a great option for when you are either on a budget or there is little requirement for any performance from the garage door.
The real beauty of this roller door is its simplicity and lightweight design and components keeping the safety of the door guaranteed and every door is compliant with all the latest regulations concerning a door of this type. With the electric motor option you automatically get a safety reverse based on resistance from an obstruction. There is no requirement for complicated infra red beams or bottom edge detection systems as the external motor drive uses a whole different method for obstacle detection.

The principle of this type of roller garage door is very simple in that a single sheet of rolled and profiled steel is connected to a lightweight skeleton barrel and steel shaft and the roller curtain simply rolls up and down with this spring balanced system. The steel curtain is coated in a tough plastisol colour finish with options on solid and woodgrain colours.
Each door is made to measure to the millimetre and the simple system fits behind either the brickwork opening or a timber frame fitted to suit. The curtain roll is larger than most roller doors, requiring about 400mm to give a clear opening but the whole roller door is so simple and forgiving on out of square openings and unlevel floors.
The definition for a ‘single’ width size with these doors is any size up to 3.4m wide.
Price
Expect to pay between £1,200 and £1,800 inc. VAT installed for a one off installation with a choice of colours. Enhancements such as trimming around the door frame, weather seals on the floor and upgrades on the guides will push the price up slightly and you should always be very aware of exactly what you are getting as a finished job to compare like for like against others.
To keep the installation basic we would expect there to be a separate pedestrian door access to the garage, power supply available nearby and sufficient hanging points on the garage ceiling for the door tracks and the operator boom.
The double width size is generally between about 4.3m and 4.8m on a standard UK size double width garage. These doors are made to measure as standard on the width and the height with a standard height being around 2.2m in the UK.

Security
There is a 2 point steel rod locking system at around waist height consisting of a handle and key lock which throws 2 rods internally into the steel side channels.
The bottom rail on this door is an extruded profile offering great resistance to force.
Ease of Use
Being a lightweight roller door, it is simple to operate. There is no need for any oiling or greasing as the runner system is a dry running principal. There are minimal moving parts as the entire curtain is one sheet.
With the electric operator option all you have to do is press a button either on one of the 2 hand transmitters supplied or the way mounted control station which sits inside your garage.
If there is a power cut then you have to enter the garage by another door and release the motor drive to operate the door manually which will be quite effortless. If there is no other access then there is a release mechanism which is attached to the handle or drilled into the panel as a key release mechanism with cable attachment.

So many doors are simple being made in small workshops and sheds and then sold as a luxury electric insulated roller door but in fact are far from it.
This simple steel single skin roller door can hold its own in terms of quality and reliability and will only be beaten by higher end aluminium roller doors in terms of performance and security.
Take it from us if you just want a simple low cost roller door for your garage then you would be better off using one of these single skin steel roller doors rather than a badly made electric insulated aluminium roller door..
This roller door is super simple and forgiving when the structural opening isn’t so good. It has plenty of tolerance and as already mentioned very few moving parts in reality.
