Q:Can I add an electric operator to side hinged doors?

Yes you can, the only real restriction is that they are less than 3 metres wide in total and manufactured with sufficient strength in the panels to avoid too much flexing.
We offer several remote control systems for side hinged garage doors and mainly the most cost effective way is to use a good quality high powered standard boom type electric operator combined with a hinged door (swing door) conversion kit.
The kit is really only 2 steel rods that push and pull the door leaves at the top edge as required to open and close the doors. The doors are held closed and secure by the operator so any locking or latching devices have to be removed or disabled.
The remote control operator is mounted just above the doors and an average unit is about 3200mm long in total and is supported in 1 or 2 places inside the garage from the roof.  The conversion kit attaches to the sliding carriage unit of the operator to enable a simple push and pull of the door leaves with one leaf moving before the other to take care of any rebated and overlapping door panels.
This kind of system is very reliable and has proper safety detection already built in just like a normal up and over door so when either or both of the door leaves are obstructed the doors will stop and reverse to avoid damage or injury.
