5 Things you need to know about quality roller doors

5 things that make a roller door safe!

There is so much confusion on the quality and safety standards for electric roller garage doors in the UK right now, simply because there are many garage doors being sold which are not compliant with the basic current regulations.

TGDC experts have created a straightforward guide on how to choose a safe electric roller garage door.

Let us make it simple: What makes a safe and reliable electric roller garage door?

1. A remote controlled’ roller garage door should have a safety detection system to stop the door moving if an obstacle is met during closing and preferably revere slightly or fully. This can be a leading- edge detection device or a light grid system or in some cases a power surge detection system. Nothing else is recognised including single point infra red safety beams on their own.

2. The roller door should have an anti-fall-back device fitted to prevent the roller door from ever dropping if an internal component fails on the motor or drive connection. This is usually something which cannot be seen on an assembled roller door, but is a legal requirement.

3. The roller door warranty minimum should be 5 years on the hardware and 2 – 5 years on electronic components. Many European manufacturers offer 10 years on their garage doors. Beware of very fluffy guaranteed statements from low priced doors, they are not worth anything we have found from people contacting us when there is a problem, and they cannot get anywhere with the original supplier and remember your guarantee is with the retailer not the manufacturer if the retailer disappears.

4. Most roller doors are a double skinned and ‘insulated door’. When looking at a roller door from the outside it may be hard to tell if it is insulated, therefore a trusted manufacturer is the key. Most quality doors will use German or Dutch manufactured 77mm high slats that are around 19mm deep, and foam filled meaning they are double skinned in their construction. These doors are continually assessed and controlled by the best manufacturers for consistent quality and strength.

There are some very specialised single skin aluminium roller garage door available when insulation isn’t important and these are featured as high security doors.

It is also important to know that pretty much every ‘insulated’ roller garage door sold in the UK does not have a stated U value for its insulation testing. Whilst the slats maybe have a tested u value a complete door cannot be tested and given a rating as there are too many gaps in an average door. The insulated roller door will provide some insulation for sure it just isn’t measured and varies depending on size and where the door is fitted too.

5. High quality roller doors use sophisticated methods such as nylon webbing or strengthened steel connectors to connect the slat sections together. In contrast the cheaper roller doors use nylon or plastic end locks, which pull apart after a short while.
