GRP Up and Over Door

GRP Up and Over Door

GRP

Size:

Single

Electric Operation:

from £350 extra

Description:

GRP (Fibreglass) Up and Over Door - Single Width

Prices Range:

£1,300 - £1,750

GRP (or fibreglass) doors are ideal for recreating beautiful designs only normally available in timber but without any of the maintenance issues and also less cost. Their simple one piece construction makes them very easy to use and provide both a low-effort and zero hassle operation. When we say 'basic' GRP up and over we normally refer to simple designs without glazing or design elements. All our GRP doors are of the highest quality and have excellent durable finishes and operating gear options.

GRP is an excellent material for doors being very strong and durable with almost zero maintenance required on the surface, just an occasional wipe down like any outdoor product.  GRP is also great for moulding into any shape and therefore can be used to recreate beautiful door designs usually only available in timber door panels but in GRP costing far less and without the maintenance.

Price

Expect to pay between £1,300 and £1,750 inc. VAT installed for a one off installation for a medium to high quality GRP door, with a 10 year guarantee and a good choice of fully finished wood effect colours externally. Door ranges vary in that some are only standard sizes, whilst some are purpose made and priced in bands of a foot width at a time.

Replacing an existing up and over garage door that is one of the older standard sizes from the 70's and 90's, of either 7’ x 6’6” or 7’ x 7’ is one of the most common installations carried out, but do expect many variations in the fixing sub frame sizes if it needs replacing as they do vary. It is also common to replace a garage door and install the new one to the rear of the opening to gain more width and height, allowing easier drive through with a vehicle.

Additional Costs

Other Sizes

There are so many standard UK and European sizes to choose from, and a single size GRP door category is right up to 9 feet (2743mm) wide. There are standard and purpose made sizes for many different ranges we have to offer and GRP ranges are either standard or purpose made.

Retractable Operating Gear Instead of Canopy

The retractable operating mechanism is always sturdier in the long run and is less prone to mechanical issues, usually priced around £40 - £50 more. This does make adding remote control automation easier and cheaper.

Windows

GRP doors with windows will always cost more as the windows are cut in by hand, and there are many options on the type of glazing used as well as leading styles, etc.
Many images you may see of doors with large window styles may only be simulated glazing and using black finished GRP for the effect of a window. For actual glazing to let light in, there is quite often additional charges and options on the glazing.

Different Colours

There is normally enough choice of finishes with most GRP ranges, but special colours can be achieved at a cost of about £180 inc. VAT if required.

Steel Fixing Sub Frame

To replace an old timber sub frame, always required on a new garage opening without a frame already in place this would be priced around £90 - £120 more. This is a truly desirable option as you remove all timber and maintenance issues in addition to gaining a much higher level of security and tighter tolerances on the factory fitted frame, with smaller gaps around the door panel.

Higher Security Locking

This usually means getting four locking points on the door rather than two, and does make the door very secure if fitted with a steel sub frame as well - about £50 more

Remote Control Electric Operation

This will depend on whether the operating gear is canopy or retractable, but for retractable doors allow between £350 - £450 for a good quality European manufactured model, with two transmitters and appropriate safety mechanisms. (This assumes the operator is being fitted at the same time as the door for the price).

For Canopy type doors allow an extra £100 for a good quality canopy bow arm converter, and make sure you get exactly the right electric operator to fit with the door manufacturer and design or you will be buying a lot of trouble!

The finer details such as chassis construction and the use of box section rather than older construction methods will be of interest to anyone who wants a GRP door to truly last, and for this we recommend the Hormann Series 2000 or the Cotswold GRP range. The Garador GRP range is also highly rated.
