Q:Can I buy the operating mechanism to build my own timber garage door?

Yes, and there are plenty of options we can provide for all sizes and weights of timber infill
We have supplied the operating gear for timber garage door panels and complete door chassis systems since 1986 for self build projects, architects, developers and DIY projects, These systems enable the construction of a bespoke garage door, usually in timber, for those who wish to match existing styles on a property or create a unique door  in their own style.

We offer as standard the Hormann N80 'open for infill' chassis for single size doors and the Hormann DF98 'open for infill' chassis for double width doors or where the timber being used is heavier than the N80 chassis system will take. These chassis door systems are the basis for all the Hormann up and over doors and provide a super stable open door panel for inserting material into with all the operating mechanism already attached including locking, weatherstrips and springing.  The chassis is constructed from box section galvanised steel and powdercoated in dark brown as standard, with white as an option on many sizes. The doors in the UK are supplied in many standard sizes but can be ordered as purpose made too if required. Extra spring lifting capability when required means you can use heavier timbers such as Oak but the weight per square metre has to be calculated first.
These door systems can be manual or electric operated using a standard boom type electric operator system.

Another system we offer is the Hormann ET500 'open for infill' and this system is derived from a powerful underground car park door system originally meaning a very sturdy and powerful mechanism capable of many operation per day. This door system is always purpose made and always electric operated with the option of a pedestrian wicket entrance door in the main panel if required. The door is built with its own steel sub frame for installation to the garage structure. The steel work can be powdercoated to almost any colour if required.
This system is generally used for much larger openings and of course where there are multiple users. Methods of access control are numerous depending on the level of security required.
