Q:Is it Possible to Have a Glass Garage Door?

Yes it is possible but not completely manufactured from glass as it would not be physically possible or safe
You may well see all over the internet on searches for 'glass garage doors' the same kind of images appearing and they are mainly from American companies producing a sectional garage door from a mixture of aluminium and glazing panels which can be either a clear polycarbonate or in rare cases from actual glass, albeit the standards would not be acceptable in the UK. Lots of large sections of glass being lifted up and over your head would send shivers down the spine of a health and safety inspector!

In the UK at present there are 2 ways of getting very high quality, stylish, modern looking 'fully glazed' 'glass garage doors' and both use a very high quality polycarbonate glazing which has been developed to be as scratch resistant as possible. For the Hormann sectional glass garage door options they use a product called "Duratec' and this is derived from their industrial door range designed to combat a lot of abuse on a daily basis.

The Hormann sectional door model known as the ALR 40 has been developed to have large and larger sections of this glazing in each panel and bear in mind the glazing is also double glazed. The ALR40 'vitraplan' is a glass sectional door with 2 very stylish options of spoked effect glazing to produce an almost seamless effect on the front facade where the aluminium panel structure is hidden behind the glazing which overlaps in the design.

The standard ALR40 offers the same mechanism but the glazing has the aluminium framework showing and this framework can be ordered in any colour required with options on the glazing inserted, including note recently triple glazing options if insulation is more important.

The other option is to take a look at the many variations available with the Domina Overlap trackless sectional door. This door is constructed as standard in an 80mm double skinned timber construction using very high quality composite timbers for rigidity and stability. The door can be manufactured with a very high proportion of glazing in the 2 panels that the door is constructed from and the door is always balanced beautifully as it uses a simple but effective counter weight balance system.

There will be a lot of different options for the glazing used of course to create different effects and you can decide whether you want anyone to see into your garage space, maybe to show off your pride and joy vehicle or have obscure options to have the full effect of the light coming in but no vision from outside.
