Q:What is a standard size for a roller garage door?

There really isn't a standard size for most roller doors as they are made to order by most manufacturers but there are some very commonly used sizes of course
Generally for single size roller doors the most common size is probably a door to fit an opening 7'6" (2286mm) wide and 7'0" (2134mm) high.
As nearly all roller doors are installed the the inside face of a garage opening then you have to remember that there are guides either side of the main roller door curtain and these guides can vary in size from one manufacturer to the next. So generally for most aluminium insulated roller doors the guides are between 70mm and 100mm wide so take the brickwork opening and add the guid size twice and there is your overall size which for most roller doors is how they are order but there are exceptions so be careful!!

As a roller door operates vertically and never swings out at any point during opening then you can of course install a door that is technically wider than it needs to be as long as your internal reveal sizes can accomodate the extra width. Example: a brickwork opening of 2250mm to be fitted with a roller door that has 75mm guides either side. The ideal order size would be 2250 +75 +75 = 2400mm, easy.  If you have internal reveals that were say a full brick width each side then that would be about 220mm either side so you could fit a roller door with an overall width anywhere between the ideal 2400 and up to 2690mm.  Why would you do this?  Sometimes there are special offers on a set size of roller door from a manufacturer and you could use a standard size that may not be quite correct and it will still work fine.

Many other factors do come into play with roller doors of course such as the curtain roll size which varies depending on the height of the door because the taller the door the more curtain there is to roll up and therefore it is larger.  ALL roller doors have a slight hang down when fully opened as the bottom slat will be stopped by varying forms of  guide stops and the remaining part of the bottom slat will usually encroach on the drive through height by about 50-60mm so be very aware of this if your height required when open is critical. There is no easy rule to apply here just call us and we can assist in getting the right information.
Generally the height required for an aluminium roller door on most standard height garages is between 270mm and 350mm.
