Application Notes:

Up & Over garage doors are still the most common garage door type installed within the UK.
Their simple one panel piece construction makes them easy to use and provide both a relatively low-effort and zero hassle operation. The one piece panel gives great flexibility in design options particularly with timber which is a very versatile material to use for doors.
When we say basic timber up and over we are normally referring to simple timber designs without glazing or complex panel designs and they are all using cedarwood boarding.
All our up and over doors are of the highest quality and the mechanisms are normally manufactured in Germany to very high exact standards and the timber section is created in the UK.

One piece up and over garage doors in double width sizes only have one type of operating mechanism - fully retractable. This is how the garage door panel opens and closes and retractable doors should always be fitted wherever possible and they are much easier to add remote control electric operators to.

Double width timber garage door installation by The Garage Door Centre Double width timber up and over garage door

Expect to pay between £3,600 and £5,500 inc. VAT installed for a one off installation of a high quality, but basic panel design timber door. The upper end of the pricing refers to the use of more expensive timber species such as Oak or Idigbo. Details such as trimming around the newly installed sub frame, weatherseals and internal supports for tracking can always ramp up the price depending on many different factors, so always make sure you compare EXACT specifications if you are concerned on the final finish and look.

Replacing an existing up and over garage door that is one of the older standard sizes of either 14’ x 6’6” or 14’ x 7’ is one of the most common installations carried out, but do expect many variations in the fixing sub frame sizes if it needs replacing as they do vary.

Additional Costs

Other Sizes

The price given above will cover two of the most standard of double sizes in the UK and these sizes are determined by the internal frame dimensions and nothing else but some manufacturing methods allow purpose made sizes to be offered at no extra cost
It is impossible to generalise on the prices of other sizes as there are so many standard UK and European sizes to choose from and a single door category is right up to 16 feet (4877mm) wide let alone the purpose made sizes available from Woodrite, Garador and Hormann.

Finished Colours

Factory finished colours are available and normally add around an additional £200.
The basic finish offered at no cost is normally a clear base coat stain to protect the timber until final finishing is carried out.

Fixing Sub Frame

To replace an old sub frame is preferred and is always required on a new garage opening without a sub frame already in place – allow about £90 - £259 more. You have either a steel box section or timber sub frame, being an obvious choice for a timber garage door of course. For the timber sub frames there are many options offered with huge v ariations on price again mainly driven by the timber species required with oak and idigbo being the more expensive options. The size of the frame will obviously affect the price too.

Higher Security Locking

Usually means getting four locking points on the door rather than two and does make the door very secure if fitted with a steel sub frame as well - about £50 more
Garador do offer a 'secured by design' option now with their Guardian range of single size steel up and over doors and these have serious reinforcements to make a very secure door but the price is about 50 - 70% more.

Remote Control Electric Operation

This will depend on whether it is canopy or retractable operating gear but for retractable doors allow between £450 - £600 for a good quality European manufactured model with 2 transmitters and appropriate safety mechanisms. (This assumes the operator is being fitted at the same time as the door for the price)
We recommend the use of European manufactured operators to ensure total confidence in CE compliance and also reliability in transmission frequencies and internal electronic components.
