Q:How much is an electric garage door operator added to an existing door?

This can vary a lot depending on the type door it is fitting too and the level of access control and features you want on the operator itself as well as the level of security.
a standard garage door operator is normally around £450 inc. VAT for a single sized door and £550 inc. VAT  for a double width door installed with 2 hand held transmitters assuming  the door it is fitting to is in top working order and using retractable operating gear. Yes there are cheaper ones and many more expensive but that is the average price for a European made unit with proper belt or nylon chain driven mechanism and 24V operation for quietness usually with a soft start and soft stop feature to take the stress of the moving parts when opening and closing.
Of course this assumes you have power readily available and another entrance into the garage and the garage door itself is not in too bad condition, and is using RETRACTABLE operating gear. Many people ask for an electric operator price for an exisitng door because their door is too heavy but in many cases this is because the door has not been installed correctly or serviced for many years, or never of course. A badly operating garage door cannot be fitted with an electric operator as the safety features will not work correctly and ii is imperative the door is balanced and smooth in operation for the operator to work correctly and not be a potential danger.

What will change the price of an electric operator?

A garage door with canopy operating gear - It will need a canopy bow arm converter to operate at all and without it simply won't open more than 2/3rds of the way up - Average cost £85

A garage door that needs attention with worn parts - Anybodys guess to the cost but the door must be as near to 100% perfect as possible in order for the operator to utilise its safety detection system properly. This can be achieved even on very old doors as long as the company engineer knows how to service and adjust the door properly first. An electric operator should NEVER be put onto a door because it is far too heavy and not operating smoothly!

A garage with no other pedestrian entrance - You will need an emergency release device connected to the outside so in the event of a power failure you can release the electric motor from the door and still gain access - Average cost £50. A battery back up facility is also available on many operator models if power cuts are frequent.

A garage where the power is not nearby - The power supply will need to ideally be within a metre of most operators to avoid the need for part p and expensive electric additions but it is possible to use an extension lead from a socket and then clip or trunk the cable as necessary to avoid part P testing.

Extra access control devices are required - More than the standard 2 transmitters, maybe more transmitters, a keypad, a keyswitch, a finger reading device and so on are all control devices able to give total control tailor made to the  users of the garage door or doors. Prices start from about £40 for extra transmitters.

More security is required - the standard locking facility for all electric operators on up and over, sectional and side hinged doors using a boom type operator is the electric motor itself holding the door closed. For extra security latches connected back to the towing arm can utilise the manual locking provided with the door and provide 3 point locking in most cases.  Average cost £60
More expensive solenoid type locking devices can be used when required on sectional and side hinged doors and these can be considerably more money

Many other situations will arise where extra equipment is required to make the garage door function as required over and above the basic device and we can help you with any aspect of automating an existing garage door or indeed making sure the right electric operator is used with a new door installation.
