Whilst a one piece, pressed steel, double up and over door is a good choice if your needs are simple in terms of performance, a garage door with built-in pedestrian door is a great option to consider if you enter and exit the garage frequently on foot. This built-in door is called a wicket door.
This example is for a simple traditional vertical design, but the door itself is designed for multiple vehicle garages, and is rated to be opened 25 times a day. It is effectively a commercial-grade up and over door.
A pedestrian, or ‘wicket’ door as they are referred to, offers great versatility if your garage perhaps offers access to your home,or you simply use the garage a lot but not for a vehicle, maybe a workshop or office or gym, etc.
This price range refers to a fully retractable operating mechanism with a standard white finish. It includes all the hardware required, as well as a steel box section outer fixing frame to replace any timber frame used and provide a better overall operation, as well as a 10 year guarantee.

Details such as trimming around the door frame, weatherseals on the ground and upgrades on the locking will push the price up slightly.
There are some other nice options for this door including insulation and sound boarding for the inside of the panel. Price is referring to the German purpose sizes, all around the 4m to 4.5m width and an average height of 2100mm. Other sizes are available and this price is always for a made to measure size.
The N500 in ribbed variations includes a 2 point rod locking system (not inferior cable locking), and also always has the strong box section steel fixing sub frame integrated, ensuring no timber is used and the door operates in the tightest possible tolerances. The steel sub frame is an integral part of the overall door design and operation.
The key to having a pedestrian door in another door panel is overall strength to ensure stability when you have effectively cut the door from top to bottom in two places. Hormann have perfected this in the engineering for this door model, with many options existing to upgrade performance further.
TIP: You should always be aware of exactly what you are getting as a finished job to compare like for like.

Pedestrian Door
The pedestrian door can be specified to be in the centre, right or left hand side on the main door panel, and always opening outwards, no option.
The pedestrian door gives 735mm of passage when open fully, and around 700mm when opened at 90 degrees.
The threshold is around 45mm.
A standard lever/lever handle set is provided, with options for the material and colour finishes.
Colours and Finishes
For this price example we are offering only the white finish, but often there are some other colours given at the same price as white. Brown or Anthracite is a common option either at no extra cost or very low extra cost option.
Other colours such as black, blue or various greys will add around £140; there are 7 standard colours. You can then choose almost any RAL colour at additional cost including the polar CH703 anthracite metallic finish.
Security
The locking on the Hormann N500 steel retractable up and over door is a 2 point bottom latch steel bowden cable, and slam latch locking system with the handle locked via a euro profile cylinder. Combined with the robust galvanised steel outer box section fixing frame, the basic security is actually quite good.
You can specify break-in resistant locking for the N500, providing extra locking upon any forced entry attempt. This will add around £175. Additional locking is also available for the pedestrian door and the main door panel. Details on request.
Ease of Use
Being a manual door, it is operated by hand, and this involves simply grabbing the handle and turning to unlatch. The lifting of the door panel is assisted by a torsion spring. Adjusted properly, it is reasonably easy to operate, but can certainly be a tougher operation if you have any shoulder or back issues.
The real key to this door is the ease of access in and out by simply using the hinged pedestrian door, it doesn’t get much easier! And, with only a 45mm threshold step, this is a winner combination.
You can automate the door no problem, a couple of safety options are required to make sure it can only operate when the pedestrian door is fully closed.

A pedestrian door within a large garage door is a fantastic and underrated solution for so many garages. This isn’t exactly a budget option, however it is an exceptional garage door manufactured entirely in Germany to exacting standards, making a normal UK up and over sourced garage door seem quite flimsy and insecure. This is a great engineered product and a serious piece of machinery.
The principal is superb - being able to enter and exit your garage without lifting anything, but simply opening a pedestrian door using a lever handle.
It may look expensive, but only compared to cheap alternatives, the same applied to the sectional door with a pedestrian door too. Great solution that often solves a problem you didn’t know you had!
Not really necessary to have this with an electric operator but possible if required.
